THE CREWSMESS

At least on submarines the crewsmess is the gathering place of the vessel. This is where the men eat their meals, read books, play cards and games like acey ducey. This is also the location of some of the best story telling by the masters of the tall tale.

The crew gets to meet face to face with others in the crew who may live, (sleep), someplace else in the boat and maybe even work at the opposites ends of the vessel.

It is the social center of the vessel for the enlisted men. The officers tend to remain in the Wardroom but they have been known to "prowl" the crewsmess from time to time.

This is the place you can leave messages in our guest log or interact on our PigBoats.COM BBS. Feel free to join in. Now "Rig for dive" and join us on this patrol.

Thanks,

The evening meal is served on the USS R-7 circa 1926.

We would watch movies after the evening meal and again after soup down at midnight in the crewsmess. Movies would be too long to embed here but to give you the flavor of submarine life we offer you these two songs performed by Tommy Cox who is also a qualified submariner.

The late Rick Larson and PigBoats.COM contributor showing his lost boats locator map to the press. When I was looking for a way of using PigBoats.COM to further exposure to the submarine service Rick and his extensive collection of all types of submarine memorabilia came to mind. I left the choice up to Rick to showcase what he wanted to share. Unfortunately, Rick was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer in late 2007 and he needed to concentrate on his health. His passing on May 28, 2008 was a sad event to such a great person and family man and a loss to the submarine community. Rick loved the submarine service and was very proud to have been a member of this exclusive brotherhood.
I am very proud to have been able to call Rick a friend and saddened to have had that friendship cut so short.
Rest in peace Shipmate.
